Suitable for Contained Gardens
Strong against mildew
Fast growing with full-flavoured, attractive serrated leaves that can be ready in as little as 5 weeks.
Plants are slow to bolt, have downy mildew tolerance and can be grown under cover for autumn-winter crops.
Outdoors: sow thinly, March-September, where they are to crop, 2.5cm (1″) deep, directly into finely-prepared, fertile, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Allow 25cm (10″) between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 7-21 days. Keep moist. Harvest unthinned as baby leaves, or thin to 10cm (4″) apart for mature plants.
Or, sow indoors, October-March, to grow in a tunnel or greenhouse. Sow into cells in trays of compost in gentle warmth. Transplant to borders or large pots when approx. 7.5cm (3″) tall. Keep moist. Harvest: All year round. Note: Late spring and summer crops are ready to harvest from 40-60 days. Autumn and winter crops take a minimum of 90 days, depending on temperature.
